In School Residencies

A residency is a “mini-course,” or sequential series of 5-15 workshops (classroom sessions), led by a teaching artist in collaboration with teachers and YA staff.  The goal of a residency is to teach a multi-disciplinary curriculum by immersing students in a particular art form and teaching another subject area through that art form.  This process actively engages students in creative learning, developing a broad range of cognitive, performance and social skills.  In a residency, students meet applicable NYS learning standards in the arts and other curriculum areas.  Residencies also provide mutually rewarding opportunities for artists and educators to work together.  Careful planning helps artists and teachers understand how the curriculum can best be integrated to maximize learning.  Learning is most successful when artists and teachers work as a team, “co-teaching,” to complement and reinforce each other's work in the classroom.

Residencies begin with a planning session, and include ongoing evaluative dialogue and follow-up sessions for artists, teachers and YA staff to share feedback and monitor results.  Assessment tools are developed as needed.  Residencies may be chosen from pre-established programs or developed on request.  We can help you create a new program based on a curricular area, art form, work of art, and/or general theme.  Residencies vary in length (number of sessions per classroom) and may be scheduled over several days or many weeks.  Fees vary depending upon the length, number of classrooms involved, and whether or not the program is new.  We highly recommend that you include at least one professional development workshop in conjunction with a residency!

In School Workshops

A workshop is an opportunity for a group of students to work directly with a YA artist in the classroom.  Workshops are pre-established programs that integrate art-making with another subject area, and provide a hands-on arts-in-education experience.  For example, students might learn math through a drawing workshop, or history through a writing workshop.  Workshops may be scheduled in a variety of ways depending upon the needs of the school.  For instance, they may be scheduled to include all classes in a particular grade level, or for the entire school in conjunction with performances.  Customary length is 40-45 minutes, and group size ranges from 15 to 30 students.

After School Programs

Residencies, workshops and performances are available for students in community and recreational centers after school, on weekends and during the summer.  These programs are specially designed to meet the needs of young people in these settings.  For example, New Directions is our 23-year-old after school program serving children in area recreation centers.  Students work with artists in 10-week residencies that culminate in a performance or exhibit based on student work.

Family Programs

These performances provide an opportunity for families to experience a YA artist together in an evening or weekend event.  Family programs may focus on a special occasion or holiday, and may also connect to programs given during the school day.
